Description

Help class members rebuild movement, confidence and connection after stroke.

As more people are living with the effects of stroke, instructors are increasingly likely to welcome class members who have had a stroke or who are supporting someone who has. This CPD will expand your understanding of stroke and give you greater confidence to support people safely and positively within your classes.

You’ll learn how stroke can affect movement, balance, coordination, fatigue, communication, confidence and emotional wellbeing. You’ll also explore practical ways to adapt exercises, support participation and help class members feel included, understood and encouraged.

This CPD is not about becoming a stroke rehabilitation specialist. It is about giving instructors the knowledge, awareness and practical tools to help people get moving again, reduce isolation and enjoy the powerful social benefits of being part of a class.

What instructors will get from the CPD

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • understand what a stroke is and how it can affect the brain and body
  • recognise common physical, cognitive and emotional effects after stroke
  • feel more confident welcoming stroke survivors into class
  • adapt exercises to support different levels of ability, balance and coordination
  • understand the importance of fatigue management and pacing
  • use clear, supportive communication with class members after stroke
  • encourage safe movement, confidence and independence
  • recognise when to signpost to a healthcare professional
  • support social connection and reduce feelings of isolation through class participation
