Lance’s Story: Turning a Lifetime of Skills and Experiences into a Meaningful New Career
Lance’s journey shows that a powerful career change doesn’t require starting again from zero — it simply means using the skills and experiences you already have in a new way.
After spending all of his working life in road transport and logistics, Lance had built decades of valuable work experience: communication, people management, timekeeping, decision-making and confidence working with the public. Like many people in their 60s, he wasn’t ready to retire, but he also wanted a role that better matched his values, lifestyle and energy.
When his wife spotted the advert for Move it or Lose it instructors, Lance realised it was exactly the type of opportunity he had been hoping to find in his own long term job search for something more fulfilling.
He didn’t need a fitness background — he simply needed enthusiasm, empathy and the ability to encourage people. All of this came naturally through his life experience.
During training, Lance quickly discovered that many of the qualities that made him good at his previous roles made him a brilliant instructor too.
Years of managing teams meant he could motivate a group. Years of navigating challenges on the road meant he had excellent problem solving skills.
Once qualified, Lance started teaching two classes while working shifts at his old job. He planned his timetable carefully, used flyers and Facebook posts to promote his classes, and spoke to people in the community — all skills he had gained throughout his career. His work experience didn’t go to waste; it simply found a new purpose.
Word spread quickly. Soon he grew to six weekly classes, each tailored to different abilities. His class members felt understood, supported and inspired because Lance brought warmth, humour and genuine care — qualities only strengthened through life experience.
He now describes his new role as “rewarding, fulfilling and the perfect way to transition into retirement at my own pace.” His story is proof that you don’t need a fitness background to succeed — you simply need the willingness to use the skills and experiences you’ve already spent a lifetime building.
And that’s the best career advice of all: the right career change doesn’t replace your past; it builds on it.
