FAQs about FABS training
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get asked. If there are any other questions then don’t hesitate to contact us fabs@moveitorloseit.co.uk
Am I too old or not fit enough to do the training?
Not at all. Aroundhalf of the people we train are over 50.
The exercises are low to moderate intensity, and you don’t need to be “super fit” to take part. That said, the two practical days are active and can feel tiring, as you’ll be moving throughout both days.
If you have any health conditions or concerns, please get in touch before booking so we can advise you:fabs@moveitorloseit.co.uk
I’m not very confident with technology – what’s involved with the eLearning?
You’ll need access to alaptop or desktop computer(the eLearning can’t be completed on a phone).
The system is designed to be user-friendly, with clear videos and step-by-step guidance throughout. We’re happy to support you with navigating the platform and understanding what’s required.
However, we’re unable to help with:
If you can use email and watch online videos, you’ll usually be just fine.
Is FABS the same as a Level 2 qualification?
No. FABS isnota generic Level 2 qualification like gym instructor or exercise-to-music awards.
TheFABS Training Programme is unique to Move it or Lose itand focuses entirely on delivering safe, inclusive exercise forolder adults and people with long-term health conditions. We are the only provider that delivers this programme.
What will FABS allow me to do?
- If you already hold a Level 2 fitness qualification: FABS counts ascontinuing professional development (CPD)and gives you specialist skills to work with older adults.
- If you’re new to exercise instruction: FABS is acomplete training programme, giving you the knowledge and practical experience to deliver safe, inclusive classes for older adults in community settings, care environments or one-to-one.
Is FABS nationally recognised?
Yes. FABS is endorsed by Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA)— the professional body for the fitness industry. CIMSPA members receive10 CPD points.
It’s also endorsed byEMD UK, the national charity for group exercise.
Is FABS recognised by gyms and leisure centres?
Some gyms and leisure centres require staff to hold Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications (such as personal training or exercise referral).
If your goal is to work primarily in gyms, we’d recommend exploring entry-level qualifications via CIMSPA.
That said, the people we support typically don’t attend gymsand prefer friendly, local community settings – which is exactly where FABS works best.
I already have other fitness qualifications – why should I do FABS?
FABS is different because it brings everything together.
The programme is built around theChief Medical Officer’s guidelines for older adults, combining:
You’ll learn:
Our adherence rates are extremely high — once people try FABS, they tend to stick with it.

Aroundhalf of the people we train have no previous fitness qualifications and many go on to become excellent instructors.
What matters most is:
We can teach the rest.
Is FABS recognised by the NHS?
We work with theNHSin some areas, and as social prescribing continues to grow, we regularly receive referrals. However, we can’t guarantee NHS commissioning. When opportunities arise, we share them with our instructor network.
What is social prescribing?
Social prescribing allows health professionals to refer people tonon-medical, community-based support.
Rather than a prescription, someone might be signposted to a local group, such as a Move it or Lose it class to help with:
It’s a growing area, and FABS fits naturally within it.

It’s not a requirement, but we strongly recommend it. We offer an online first-aid course, or you can complete one elsewhere. For licensed instructors, first-aid training is included and can be refreshed annually.
Do I need a DBS check?
Not usually. As a self-employed instructor, you won’t need a DBS unless a venue (such as a care home) specifically requests one — in which case, they’ll apply on your behalf.
Do you teach the exercises on the practical training days?
The practical training days are not about teaching the exercises from scratch.
You’re expected to arrive having completed the eLearning, watched all the exercise videos and practised in advance. The practical days are where you demonstrate delivery, receive feedback, refine technique and complete your assessment.
Learners who prepare properly find the days supportive and enjoyable.
How physical are the practical training days?
The two practical days are active and can feel tiring.
You’ll be regularly moving, demonstrating exercises seated and standing, and taking part throughout both days. Regular breaks are built in, and you’re encouraged to adapt movements where needed — just as you would with your own class members.
Do I need to be confident exercising in front of others?
No. You don’t need to be a performer or a “fitness personality”. The training focuses on safe, clear and inclusive delivery, not perfection.
Assessments are carried out in a supportive, encouraging environment, and many learners start out feeling nervous and leave feeling much more confident.
What if I have an injury or health condition myself?
Many of our learners manage their own health conditions or injuries.
