Move it or Lose it! Training – Autumn Chair-based Exercise Course
At the weekend, we held our third chair-based exercise course of the year in conjunction with the Centre for Healthy Ageing Research at University of Birmingham. This time we had learners travelling from far and wide, most notably Switzerland, to attend the course and they were from a variety of backgrounds too. Although some of the group were existing fitness professionals, the majority of the group had no fitness background and were looking to begin a new career working with older adults. The course is designed for people who have a desire to help older people within their community, whether that’s in a day centre, community centre or residential care facility. This is an entry level course open to people without any existing formal qualifications who want to deliver regular physical activity sessions.
Our learners were lucky enough to hear from experts from the Centre for Excellence. Professor Janet Lord and Dr Carolyn Greig are equally as passionate about encouraging our ageing population to move more! We feel it’s incredibly important for our instructors to be knowledgeable about ageing well. Professor Lord discussed with our learners the myths of ageing and how to help dispel those myths. Many older adults are scared to exercise and, yet, the key message is to keep moving. We know that being inactive and sedentary is more damaging for our health. In fact, being inactive kills more people in the UK than smoking!
We know there’s still a desperate need for more classes across the UK, which is why we were so keen to set up our training scheme in partnership with the Centre for Healthy Ageing Research. So, we’re incredibly pleased to announce that, as a result of this latest course, we now have 9 new instructors.
